# Topic Cluster Strategy

> Design pillar + 8-12 supporting article clusters with internal linking maps and creation…

Design a pillar page plus eight to twelve supporting articles around a topic, with a hub-and-spoke internal linking map and a prioritized creation sequence. It builds topical authority, the signal Google reads as 'this site is the expert on this topic', by concentrating internal PageRank into the pillar and covering the SERP's semantic space densely instead of with isolated posts.

## Use cases
- Planning content strategy for a new topic area
- Converting an existing blog into a cluster model
- Acting on a 'we want to be the authority on this topic' goal
- Sequencing content production before building the calendar
- Mapping existing articles into pillar-and-spoke relationships
- Preventing keyword cannibalization across supporting articles

## Benefits
- Build topical authority that outranks isolated posts in the same difficulty
- Concentrate internal PageRank into the pillar with each new spoke
- Avoid keyword cannibalization with unique intent per supporting article
- Measure cluster completeness against real competitor SERP coverage

## What’s included
- A cluster structure model with pillar, spokes and bidirectional linking
- A cluster JSON output format with keywords, link map and creation order
- Five defensive patterns: cannibalization prevention, pillar-depth balance, orphan-spoke prevention, intent matching, coverage measurement
- An anti-pattern and edge-case guide covering thin clusters, multilingual and local SEO
- A platform-comparison table for cluster analysis across major SEO tools
- Mental models: Topical Authority, Internal PageRank Flow, Semantic Clustering, Information Architecture, Pareto

## Who it’s for
Content and SEO teams who want to own a topic with structured clusters instead of scattered, isolated articles.

## How it runs
A cluster is not a list of article ideas. The skill designs it as an engineered structure, viability test first, link map included:
1. Tests pillar viability before anything: if the topic cannot support at least 8 distinct supporting articles, it is either widened or demoted to a spoke of a bigger pillar.
2. Designs 8 to 12 spokes where each targets a unique keyword and intent, with an explicit cannibalization check so no two spokes ever compete for the same query.
3. Builds the bidirectional link map: every spoke links to the pillar with a contextual anchor, the pillar links back to every spoke, and the map ships as part of the deliverable.
4. Balances depth deliberately: the pillar stays at 2,500 to 3,000 words of overview with handoff links, spokes go 1,500 to 2,500 words deep on single subtopics, so neither makes the other redundant.
5. Sets the creation sequence: pillar first, then highest-volume spokes for fast traffic, then lowest-competition spokes for easy rankings, then completeness fills.
6. Measures cluster coverage against the top 3 competitors' subpage counts: below 70 percent coverage the cluster is flagged incomplete before publishing begins.

## FAQ
### We already have sixty published posts: can those become a cluster, or is this only for new topics?
Converting an existing blog is one of the core use cases: the skill maps your current articles into pillar-and-spoke relationships, then shows which spokes are missing against real competitor SERP coverage. New-topic planning and retrofit both end in the same cluster JSON with a link map and creation order.

### Why would a cluster outrank the same articles published as standalone posts?
Two mechanisms: bidirectional internal links concentrate internal PageRank into the pillar with every new spoke, and dense coverage of the topic's semantic space sends the topical-authority signal Google reads as expertise. The cannibalization rules also give each supporting article a unique intent, so your own pages stop competing.

### Does it write the pillar and the supporting articles?
No. The output is a plan: cluster structure, keywords per spoke, an internal linking map and a prioritized creation sequence, plus completeness measurement against competitors. The writing itself is a separate production step.
